Getting it right matters as much to us as it does to you. Finding the right thing sometimes needs a bit of exploring - piecing together the right parts of the puzzle. Scroll down for answers, or if the final piece is still missing, let's figure it out together - drop us a message.

Can the Crag lead be used hands-free?

Yes - the side-release buckle lets you loop the lead around your waist and click it back on itself in seconds, switching to hands-free without unclipping from your dog. It's great for freeing up your hands on a hike, or on a winter walk when you want your hands warm in your pockets rather than exposed to the cold - knowing the lead is still right there to grab the moment you need it.

Worth knowing if you run with your dog: the Crag uses static webbing with no stretch, so any sudden lunge transfers directly to your waist or hand. For running, a dynamic bungee lead gives a smoother ride for both of you - the Ruffwear Trail Runner Lead is designed exactly for that, as is the Ruffwear Roamer Lead. The Crag is the better choice for walking-pace hands-free use.

Does the clip work securely with both collars and harnesses?

Yes - Ruffwear's proprietary anodised aluminium Talon Clip provides a strong, one-handed attachment to both collar rings and harness leash connections. The clip features an integrated swivel mechanism, which allows the webbing to move naturally as your dog explores - stopping the lead from bunching, twisting, or tangling while they roam ahead. Whether you're clipping to a back ring, a front ring, or the Crag Reflective Collar for the complete matching set, the connection stays secure.

Is the reflective webbing highly visible during night walks?

It's a significant step up from a standard fabric lead. The reflective material is woven directly into the Tubelok webbing strands rather than applied on top, so it won't crack, peel, or fade over time. Because a lead streams outward from your dog's collar or harness, it's also less likely to be hidden by fur than a collar - and it catches headlights and torchlight well.

That said, for true safety on dark roads and winter walks, passive reflectivity alone isn't the whole answer. We'd always recommend pairing it with active illumination - the Ruffwear Lumenglow High-Vis Vest and the Ruffwear Beacon Safety Light are where serious low-light kit begins.

What is a traffic handle, and when should I use it?

The traffic handle is a secondary, low-profile loop positioned close to the Talon Clip at the base of the lead. It gives you instant short-rein control - without needing to gather up loose webbing or shorten your grip. When you're navigating a busy high street, passing close to traffic, or meeting an unpredictable situation on a trail, you can grab it to bring your dog tight to your heel in a single movement. It's a small detail that makes a real difference in the moments that count.
