They grip, they sense, they adapt - but ice, frozen ground, and the chemical grit that coats pavements after a hard frost ask more of them than they were designed to handle. Some dogs charge straight in regardless, completely unbothered by the cold until it catches up with them. Others feel it immediately and start to hesitate - shortening their stride, lifting their feet, losing confidence in terrain they'd usually love.

Ruffwear took the same glass fiber lug technology used in performance winter footwear for humans and applied it directly under the dog's paw - positioned to mirror the natural texture of their own paw anatomy, giving them grip on ice and snow that feels instinctive rather than awkward. What is the most accurate way to measure my dog for the Polar Trex Boots?
Sizing is based on the width of the paw pad. Have your dog stand naturally, then lift the opposite leg so they bear their full weight down, and mark the widest points of the paw. Most dogs have significantly wider front paws than rear paws - which is exactly why the boots are sold in pairs rather than sets of four, so you can order different sizes for front and back. Use the measuring video before you order, and if you're between sizes, go up rather than down. If you're unsure, drop us a message and we'll help you work it out.
Why are the Polar Trex Boots for outdoor use only?
It comes down to the specialist outsole. The glass fiber winter lugs are engineered to grip ice, frozen ground, and packed snow - functioning like micro-cleats by mirroring the natural texture of your dog's own paw anatomy. Like human winter boots, this compound is designed for cold outdoor surfaces. Using them continuously indoors on hard floors will cause unnecessary wear on the lugs and reduce their traction over time. A short indoor trial to check fit is fine - just keep it brief.
How do I stop the boots rubbing or causing sore spots on longer walks?
Fit is everything. Before putting the boots on, check that your dog's dewclaws are neatly trimmed. Cinch the hook-and-loop strap firmly around the narrowest part of the ankle, then pull the stretch gaiter fully up over the closure. Check the tension again around 15 minutes into the walk — the material softens slightly as your dog warms up, and a quick adjustment at that point will keep everything secure for the rest of the adventure. What is the Dog Boot Dance and how long does it last?
The high-stepping, slightly comedic boot dance your dog does the first time they wear boots is completely normal - they're trying to shake off something unfamiliar, not telling you the fit is wrong. Our tip: Albie - our Golden Retriever and the dog who started all of this - was so bothered by his Ruffwear boots indoors that we weren't sure we'd ever get past it. We took him outside to somewhere he loved, and within minutes he was nose-deep in smells and had completely forgotten they were on. Getting outside quickly, somewhere worth sniffing, made all the difference. It won't work for every dog - but it can be worth a try. (the boots can't be returned once used)
