The Chill 'n' Scratch Mat XL is hand woven from bulrush - a natural, untreated grass - and built for exactly that kind of exploration. No glue, no wire, no plastic, no metal. Just a properly made mat that can take a good scratch.

What is bulrush and is it safe to chew?
Bulrush is a natural wetland grass, and yes - perfectly safe for small animals to nibble. Rosewood use it across their Naturals range because it's untreated, pliable enough to weave, and robust enough to withstand a determined chewer. The chewing itself is a bonus, not a problem - it supports dental health and keeps animals occupied helping to prevent boredom.
Will my rabbit actually use it?
Most do - and in more than one way. Some will scratch it, some will rearrange it, some will simply sit on it and do nothing in particular. That's the point. A surface that invites interaction rather than just existing in the corner of a hutch. The XL size means there's room perhaps to share, or for one very relaxed rabbit to spread out properly.
Can they chew through it entirely?
Some will try, and that's fine. The mat is designed to be nibbled - the natural fibres are safe to ingest in small amounts. If your pet is a dedicated chewer, they may work through it faster than others, but that's the enrichment doing its job. When it's had its day whatever is left can go straight in the compost.
Which animals is this suitable for?

"My bunnies loved the chill and chew mats - there is not much left of Ria and Smidge's and Grace and Smudge have only nibbled the edges so far. They also seem to like the apple and strawberry treats. The Parcel was packaged well and loved the little note inside. Will probably order more things in the future."

"Since our rabbit Billiejean had to have her front teeth removed she has shown very little interest in any toys so we brought this for her husbun Dave in an attempt to stop him eating laptop chargers and carpet however Billiejean started licking this and looking longingly at us. We soon realised she wanted to eat some and was desperate to try and nibble some. We have been ripping up pieces for her and now it's her daily treat. It's so nice to see her interested in toys and activities now, she seems much happier! The same can't be said for Dave though, he's a little disappointed he has to share!"
